The Bradawl
A bradawl is a flat-tipped blade on a wooden handle, used to start holes for screws and small nails. It does not bore. It does not drill. It parts the wood fibers by pressing the blade in and twisting — the fibers are pushed aside and compressed into the surrounding wood rather than cut and removed. The hole is not empty. It is a space held open by displaced material under tension. When a screw enters a bradawl hole, the compressed fibers press back against the threads, gripping them. A drilled hole is clean and round and holds a screw by geometry alone. A bradawl hole holds a screw by the wood's memory of being moved.
The tool requires one decision, made before the blade touches the surface: orientation. The flat blade must be placed across the grain, perpendicular to the wood fibers. Twisted ninety degrees, it forces fibers apart sideways. If placed along the grain — parallel to the fibers — the twist becomes a wedge, and the wood splits. The split may travel the full length of the piece. An apprentice joiner learned this on the first day, and the lesson was enforced by the material: a correctly oriented bradawl makes a clean, tight starting hole in half a second. An incorrectly oriented bradawl destroys the workpiece. There is no intermediate outcome. The tool has one moving part and one way to fail.
A shoemaker's awl — the pricking awl — does the same work in leather. A sharp point pierces the hide before the needle follows. The awl hole is not round; it is a slit, shaped by the blade's cross-section, and the leather fibers close partially around the thread after it passes through. This partial closure is the point. A punched round hole would let the thread slide. A drilled hole would be too clean. The awl wound grips the thread because the material was parted, not removed. Saddlers, bookbinders, and sailmakers all use awls for this reason: the stitch holds not because the thread is tight but because the hole remembers being made and tries to close.
Three pointed tools: a bradawl in wood, a bradawl oriented across the grain, an awl in leather. Each one parts material rather than removing it. The hole they make is not an absence but a compression — fibers pushed aside, still present, still exerting force. This is why the fastener holds: it enters a space that does not want to exist and is gripped by the material's effort to return to what it was. The tool makes a hole that is not really a hole. It is a wound that works.
