The Boom Vang

The boom vang — also called a kicking strap — is a line or hydraulic cylinder running from the boom down to the base of the mast or the deck. Its function is to prevent the boom from rising when the mainsheet is eased. On a downwind course, the mainsheet is let out to allow the sail to spread perpendicular to the wind. Without the vang, the boom lifts, the top of the sail twists open, and the upper portion spills wind. The vang holds the boom down, keeping the sail's twist within the range that produces drive. The vang controls the vertical angle of the boom, while the mainsheet controls the horizontal angle.

A ratchet strap on a flatbed truck serves the same function as the boom vang. Cargo is placed on the flatbed — lumber, equipment, pipe — and ratchet straps run from the tie-down points on the bed over the cargo and back down. The straps prevent the cargo from lifting during transport. Wind, bumps, and cornering forces tend to push the cargo upward and outward. The strap holds it down. Like the vang, the ratchet strap is not the primary positioning system — the cargo is placed where the driver puts it. The strap only prevents the cargo from rising out of position once external forces act on it.

In bureaucracy, an approval requirement serves the boom vang function. A project team has latitude to move in any horizontal direction — choosing approaches, assigning tasks, adjusting timelines. But the approval requirement prevents the project from rising above its authorized scope. Without the approval requirement, scope naturally lifts: teams add features, expand timelines, increase budgets. The approval process holds the project down at its authorized level, the same way the vang holds the boom down at its working angle. The approval does not choose the direction. It only prevents the upward drift that occurs when the main constraint is loosened.

The boom vang is the principle of vertical restraint on a horizontally free system. The boom can swing left and right — the mainsheet controls that. But only the vang controls whether the boom rises. Every system that grants horizontal freedom risks vertical drift: the cargo that shifts upward, the project that creeps upward in scope, the sail that twists open when the sheet runs free. The vang is the separate, dedicated control that addresses only the vertical axis, because the system that controls the horizontal axis cannot do both.
