The Boom Gallows
A boom gallows is a frame — usually an inverted U or a crossbar supported by two uprights — mounted aft of the mast to support the boom when the sail is lowered. Without the gallows, a dropped boom must be held by the topping lift, which allows the boom to swing freely with the vessel's motion. The gallows catches the boom and holds it rigid. On traditional vessels, the gallows also serves as a handhold for crew moving on deck, a mounting point for equipment, and a structural member tying the deck to the cabin top. The gallows performs its primary function only when the sail is down — it is a resting structure for a working element.
A tool rack in a workshop serves the boom gallows function. Chisels, planes, saws, and squares hang on the rack when not in use. The rack does not contribute to the work — it holds the tools between uses, preventing them from cluttering the bench, falling to the floor, or becoming damaged. The rack is a resting structure for working elements. Its design — the spacing of pegs, the height of shelves, the organization by size or type — is optimized for the transition between storage and use, not for the work itself.
In theater, the green room serves the boom gallows function for performers. Between scenes, actors return to the green room — a dedicated holding space where they rest, review notes, and prepare for their next entrance. The green room does not contribute to the performance. It holds the performers when they are not on stage, preventing the chaos that would result if off-stage actors milled about in the wings or audience areas. The green room is designed for the interval between performances, the same way the boom gallows is designed for the interval between sails.
The boom gallows is the principle of structured rest — a dedicated element whose function is to hold a working component in a stable, accessible position when it is not in use. The gallows recognizes that working elements need a place to be when they are not working, and that this place must be designed with as much care as the working system itself. A boom that swings freely when lowered is a hazard. A tool on the floor is damaged or dangerous. An actor without a green room is displaced. The gallows provides the architecture of the interval — the structure that makes the pause between uses safe and orderly.
