The Baggy Wrinkle
Baggy wrinkle is a soft, shaggy covering made from short lengths of old rope, hitched around a shroud or stay where the sails rub against the rigging. Without it, the wire or rope of the standing rigging would chafe through the sailcloth within hours of close-hauled sailing. The baggy wrinkle is made from rope that has already served its purpose — worn sheets, frayed halyards, retired docklines — cut into short pieces and marled together into a bushy sleeve. It is armor made from the dead. The cheapest, most worn-out material on the ship protects the most expensive.
Mulch in a garden works on the same principle. Dead leaves, wood chips, straw — material that has finished its biological work — is spread over living soil to protect it from the things that would degrade it: direct sun, heavy rain, temperature extremes, moisture loss. The mulch is a baggy wrinkle for the root zone. It has no nutritional value when first applied (composting comes later). Its function is sacrificial: it absorbs the environmental wear that would otherwise fall on the soil surface.
Bumper guards on industrial equipment are baggy wrinkle at factory scale. Strips of rubber, foam, or old conveyor belt are bolted to the edges of machinery, doorframes, and loading docks — anywhere hard surfaces repeatedly contact each other. The material is expendable. When it wears through, it is replaced with more expendable material. The machinery it protects costs orders of magnitude more. The guard's value is not in what it is but in the asymmetry between its cost and the cost of what it shields.
Baggy wrinkle is the principle of cheap sacrificial protection for expensive functional surfaces. The sail is the engine. The shroud is the structure. The baggy wrinkle is the disposable layer between them, made from material that has already been written off, doing the last useful work it will ever do. The principle requires three things: the protected surface must be expensive, the threat must be abrasion rather than impact, and the protector must be cheaper to replace than the damage it prevents. When all three hold, the correct answer is always to sacrifice the cheaper thing.
