The Ashlar
Ashlar is stone cut to precise rectangular blocks with flat faces and square edges, laid in regular courses with thin mortar joints. It is the opposite of rubble masonry, where irregularly shaped stones are fitted together with thick mortar filling the gaps. A rubble wall is strong but rough — the mortar does as much structural work as the stone. An ashlar wall transfers load stone to stone through near-perfect contact. The mortar is barely present. The precision of the cut is what makes the stone do the work.
Machined metal surfaces in engine construction follow the same logic. When two engine block surfaces must seal — the block to the head, the crankcase to the oil pan — they are machined flat to within thousandths of an inch. The gasket between them can be paper-thin because the surfaces nearly touch everywhere. A rough casting with an unmachined face requires a thick, compressible gasket to fill the valleys. The thicker the gasket, the more it contributes to the joint's compliance — and compliance under pressure is how gaskets fail. The machined surface, like ashlar, minimizes the gap so the filler has less work to do.
In typography, justified text with consistent word spacing is the ashlar of the page. Each line extends to the same width; the spaces between words are adjusted to fill the measure precisely. When the spacing is well-managed — hyphenation preventing wide gaps, tracking micro-adjusted — the text block presents a uniform face. Rivers (visible streams of white space running vertically through poorly justified text) are the equivalent of thick mortar joints: evidence that the pieces do not fit closely enough to carry the load of readability on their own. The text is doing structural work through alignment, and the whitespace should be barely noticeable.
Ashlar is the investment of effort in preparation rather than in compensation. A rough stone requires thick mortar; a rough surface requires a thick gasket; a rough text block requires wide spacing. In each case, the filler compensates for the imprecision of the primary material. Ashlar reverses this: the stone is prepared so precisely that the filler nearly disappears. The cost is higher at the quarry, at the mill, at the keyboard. The result is a joint where the material does the work and the filler merely confirms it.
