The Toll

The passing bell was tolled after a death in an English parish. The pattern carried specific information: nine strokes for a man, six for a woman, three for a child, followed by one stroke for each year of the deceased's age. A farmer in a far field could count the tellers and know who had died without leaving his work. The message traveled farther than a voice and required no literacy to decode. The bell's only variation was rhythm — how many strokes, how far apart — yet this was enough to encode identity, sex, and age in a signal that reached every corner of the parish. John Donne heard it and wrote that the bell diminishes everyone who hears it, because the dead person was part of the whole. The information the bell carried was not about itself. It was about who was missing.

Ship's bells marked time at sea. Each four-hour watch was divided into eight half-hour periods. At the first half hour, the bell struck once. At the second, twice. At the eighth — the end of the watch — eight bells, and the count reset. Below deck, in fog, in the featureless middle of an ocean with no landmarks and no shadows, a sailor could track the passage of time by counting strokes. The system needed no clock, no calendar, no written schedule. It encoded time in the simplest possible grammar: sequential addition up to a maximum, then return to one. Aboard every ship of the line, the same pattern kept hundreds of men synchronized without any of them seeing the same thing.

Change ringing is an English tradition that turns tower bells into a mathematical instrument. Unlike a carillon, which plays melody, change ringing produces permutations — every possible ordering of a set of bells, each rung exactly once. For seven bells there are 5,040 permutations. For eight, 40,320. A full peal of eight bells takes over three hours. Each ringer memorizes a method — a set of rules for swapping position with adjacent bells each round — and the group executes the algorithm together in real time, from memory, with no conductor and no score. What comes out of the tower is not music in any conventional sense. It is combinatorial structure made audible, a proof that the group completed the sequence without error.

One bell, three grammars. The passing bell encoded who was absent. Ship's bells encoded when the world had changed. Change ringing encoded whether the pattern was complete. The instrument never varied — bronze cast in a frame, struck by a clapper. What varied was the question the pattern was built to answer. The bell itself carries nothing. The grammar carries everything.
