The Vacancy
In 1982, Gary Larson drew a cartoon in which a caveman stands before a diagram of a stegosaurus. He points to the cluster of spikes at the end of the tail. "Now this end is called the thagomizer," the caption reads, "after the late Thag Simmons."
The joke was about a caveman killed by the spikes. The structural fact was that no formal anatomical name for the spike cluster existed. Paleontologists had described the feature — typically four dermal spikes, keratinous sheaths over bony cores, arranged in pairs — without ever naming it as a unit. When Ken Carpenter used "thagomizer" in a 1993 paper presented at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, the term migrated from comedy into science. The Smithsonian Institution adopted it for exhibit labels. It was never seriously challenged, because there was nothing to challenge it with.
In 1949, Fred Hoyle appeared on BBC Radio's Third Programme to discuss cosmology. He needed to distinguish the expanding-universe model — which held that all matter originated in a single event — from his own preferred steady-state theory, in which matter is continuously created. He called the rival theory "the Big Bang."
The phrase was dismissive. Hoyle intended it to sound absurd — an explosion out of nothing, a fairy tale with a detonation. The proponents of the expanding-universe model had no comparable term. They referred to "the primeval atom" (Lemaître) or described the mathematics of the initial singularity. Hoyle's two-syllable label was vivid, immediate, and wrong about its own subject — the expansion of the universe is not an explosion and produces no bang. But it was the only name available, and it attached.
Attempts to replace it have failed. In 1993, Sky & Telescope ran a naming contest. Thirteen thousand entries arrived. The judges rejected all of them. "Big Bang" remained. A name coined by an opponent, intended as mockery, became the standard term for the foundational event of cosmology.
The thagomizer won because paleontology had described the structure without labeling it. The Big Bang won because cosmology had a theory without a shorthand. In both cases, the naming vacuum was filled from outside the domain — a cartoonist, a rival. The outsider's name stuck not because it was accurate but because it was present. Once a term exists, displacing it requires not a better name but enough institutional momentum to overcome the installed base. Accuracy competes with familiarity, and familiarity has the structural advantage: it is already in use.
Before 1967, the objects predicted by general relativity — mass collapsed past its Schwarzschild radius — were called "gravitationally completely collapsed objects" or, in Soviet physics, "frozen stars." Wheeler began using "black hole" in a lecture at NASA's Goddard Institute, and within a year the term was ubiquitous. He did not discover the phenomenon. He named it, at a moment when no one else had, and the name determined how a generation of physicists and the entire public would think about a region of spacetime.
Leon Lederman wanted to title his book about the Higgs boson "The Goddamn Particle" — because it was so difficult to detect. His publisher changed it to "The God Particle." Physicists objected. Peter Higgs himself called the name "embarrassing." The public adopted it. The publisher's edit, made for commercial reasons by someone outside particle physics, now shapes how millions of people understand a quantum field interaction.
What these cases share is not serendipity. It is a structural property of naming: the vacancy exerts pull. A thing that has been observed, described, modeled, and theorized about but not yet named is under pressure — not physical pressure but communicative pressure. People need to refer to it. The first term that provides a referent fills that need, and filling it creates the cost of switching. The name becomes infrastructure. You can criticize the name, note its inaccuracy, propose alternatives. But you will use the original term to explain what you mean by the alternative, and that dependency is the lock.
