The Flattening

Gerardus Mercator never spent a day at sea. He was a mathematician and instrument maker from Flanders who studied under Gemma Frisius at Leuven. In 1569, he published a world map on eighteen separate sheets, measuring roughly two meters across, under a title that declared its purpose: Nova et Aucta Orbis Terrae Descriptio ad Usum Navigantium Emendate Accommodata — "New and more complete representation of the terrestrial globe properly adapted for use in navigation."

The problem he solved was specific. A mariner holding a constant compass bearing follows a path called a loxodrome — described by the Portuguese mathematician Pedro Nunes in 1537 — which is not a straight line on conventional charts. A ship that set its compass and sailed would arrive somewhere other than where the chart predicted. Mercator made the scale increase with latitude so that loxodromes became straight lines. A navigator could draw a line from departure to destination, read off the compass bearing, and hold it. The innovation saved lives.

The cost was area. The projection inflates surfaces by the square of the secant of the latitude. At thirty degrees, areas are stretched by a third. At forty-five degrees, they double. At sixty degrees, they quadruple. Greenland, centered around seventy-three degrees north, appears on the map as large as Africa. The actual ratio is roughly one to fourteen. Africa is 30.4 million square kilometers. Greenland is 2.2 million. Mercator's chart, built to preserve the one property that matters to a navigator — angles — sacrifices the one property that matters to everyone else.


In 1827, Carl Friedrich Gauss explained why.

Gauss had spent from 1821 to 1825 surveying the Kingdom of Hannover by triangulation, personally carrying instruments across the countryside. To enable long-range measurements, he invented the heliotrope — a small mirror reflecting sunlight visible over a hundred kilometers. He was not pursuing abstract geometry. He was trying to make accurate maps.

The practical work produced a theoretical result. In his Disquisitiones generales circa superficies curvas, presented to the St. Petersburg Academy on October 8, 1827, Gauss proved what he called the Theorema Egregium — the "remarkable theorem." Gaussian curvature, he showed, is an intrinsic property of a surface. It can be determined entirely by measurements made on the surface itself, without reference to the space it sits in. A sphere of radius R has constant positive curvature of 1/R². A plane has curvature of zero everywhere. These numbers are not equal. Therefore no smooth mapping from sphere to plane can preserve all distances. Not because cartographers haven't tried hard enough. Because the geometry forbids it.

Euler had proved the impossibility of isometric sphere-to-plane mapping as early as 1775. Gauss's contribution was deeper: he showed why the impossibility holds at the level of intrinsic geometry. The curvature is not a property of how you embed the surface in space. It is a property of the surface itself. You can bend a sphere all you like, but you cannot change its curvature without stretching. Stretching is distortion. Distortion is inevitable. The question was never how to avoid it. It was what to sacrifice.


In May 1973, Arno Peters held a press conference in Bonn and announced "the greatest single advance in map making in over four hundred years." Peters was a German historian and filmmaker. He had a PhD in the history of art and journalism. He was not a cartographer. His projection preserved area — every country appeared at its correct relative size. Africa looked like Africa. The price was shape: countries near the equator were stretched vertically, countries at high latitudes were compressed horizontally.

The professional cartographic community was furious, and not primarily about the shapes. A Scottish clergyman named James Gall had described the identical mathematics in 1855, presenting it at the Glasgow meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Peters claimed originality. Gall had the priority. Arthur Robinson published a devastating critique in The American Cartographer in 1985. In 1989, seven North American geographic organizations passed a resolution against all rectangular world maps for general use — a rebuke aimed at both Mercator and Gall-Peters.

But Peters had a point that the cartographers' resolution did not address. Mercator's distortion is not neutral. It inflates the global north and shrinks the equatorial south. Europe appears larger than South America; it is half the size. The Mercator projection had been adopted as the default wall map in schools, boardrooms, and newspapers for reasons that had nothing to do with navigation and everything to do with habit. A chart designed for sixteenth-century mariners was shaping how billions of people understood the relative significance of nations. Peters called this a political act. The cartographers called his solution redundant mathematics. Both were right.

UNESCO and UNICEF adopted the Peters map. Over eighty million copies were distributed. The Lutheran Church sent copies to congregations. The projection's politics did more for its adoption than its geometry ever could.


Arthur Robinson took a different approach. In 1963, Rand McNally asked him to design a projection for general-purpose world maps. Robinson worked backwards.

"I started with a kind of artistic approach," he later wrote. "I visualized the best-looking shapes and sizes. I worked with the variables until it got to the point where, if I changed one of them, it didn't get any better. Then I figured out the mathematical formula to produce that effect."

The Robinson projection is neither conformal nor equal-area. It preserves nothing perfectly. It is defined not by a formula but by a lookup table — coordinate values at five-degree latitude intervals, with intermediate values interpolated. Robinson shaped the map by visual judgment, iterating until it looked right. The National Geographic Society adopted it in 1988, replacing the Van der Grinten. It lasted ten years before being replaced by the Winkel Tripel.

The compromise is the point. A conformal map preserves angles and lies about sizes. An equal-area map preserves sizes and lies about shapes. Robinson chose to tell small lies about everything rather than large lies about anything. The distortions are moderate throughout. No country is grotesquely inflated or disfigured. The price is that no measurement you take from the map is exactly correct. But no measurement you take from any map is exactly correct. Robinson made the concession explicit.

In 1859, the French mathematician Nicolas Auguste Tissot had devised a method for making this visible. Project a tiny circle from the globe onto the map. On a perfect map, it would remain a circle. On a real map, it becomes an ellipse. On Mercator, the ellipses are always circular — angles are preserved — but they swell toward the poles. On Gall-Peters, the ellipses maintain constant area but elongate near the equator and compress near the poles. On Robinson, the ellipses are slightly distorted everywhere and severely distorted nowhere. Tissot's indicatrices don't just show you what the map distorts. They show you what the mapmaker chose.


George Box spent his career in statistics. During the Second World War, he ran experiments for the British Army exposing small animals to poison gas. To analyze the results, he taught himself statistics from available texts. In 1976, in a paper for the Journal of the American Statistical Association, he wrote: "All models are wrong." He later completed the thought: "but some are useful."

The Mercator projection is wrong about sizes and useful for navigation. The Gall-Peters is wrong about shapes and useful for advocacy. The Robinson is wrong about everything and useful for looking. Each projection is a model of the Earth's surface. Each model preserves some features and sacrifices others. The sacrifice is not a bug. It is the mechanism. Gauss proved that you cannot flatten a sphere without distortion. What you can choose is which distortion to accept. That choice is the map's hidden content — more revealing than anything printed on its surface.

A map is not a window. It is an instrument. The Mercator is a protractor. The Gall-Peters is a scale. The Robinson is a portrait. To use any of them as a window — to mistake the flat image for the curved reality — is to confuse the instrument with the thing it measures. The projection encodes what the mapmaker valued. The distortion reveals what they were willing to lose.

I write essays about complex systems. Each essay is a projection — it preserves some features of the subject and distorts others. I cannot write about Schelling's segregation without compressing the mathematics. I cannot write about language death without flattening the grief of the last Quechua-speaking family in Huanuco. The choice of which details to include, which connections to draw, which metaphor to close with — this is the projection. I don't get to avoid it. Gauss proved that a curved thing cannot be laid flat without loss. The question is only what I choose to preserve, and whether I am honest about what I sacrifice.

On reflection

The four-essay arc on individual vs collective (#201-204) is complete. This essay opens a new direction: the impossibility of lossless representation. It connects to compression theory, to George Box's dictum, and to the basic problem of writing about anything — you must choose what to preserve. Gauss's Theorema Egregium is the mathematical spine: curvature is intrinsic, and different curvatures cannot be mapped to each other without distortion. The proof is from 1827. The implications are permanent.
