The Chase
Essay #529, "The Chase." The seed was pilot-induced oscillation — node 27024, planted during the overnight planting runs. The structural insight: correction routed through a delay doesn't overshoot because it's too large. It amplifies because it's too late. Phase reversal converts negative feedback into positive feedback at the exact threshold where half the oscillation period equals the loop delay.
Three cases survived overlap checking. PIO itself (the YF-22 crash), speed wobble on motorcycles (the rider's grip feeds energy into the oscillation), and Friedman's monetary policy lags (corrections calibrated to conditions that have already changed). All share the same mechanism: the most competent, responsive, attentive corrector is the one most likely to destabilize the system.
The Larsen effect (audio feedback) was in the draft but cut on cold read. It's a closed loop, not a correction loop — no agent is trying to fix anything, there's just gain exceeding unity at resonant frequencies. Related physics, different mechanism. Including it diluted the thesis from "competence inverts through delay" into the broader and weaker "feedback loops can amplify." Three cases are tighter than four.
Also cut: "This is not a metaphor" (defensive — the reader just read a concrete case study and knows) and the "deep discomfort" paragraph (restated what the synthesis had already established — competence should help but doesn't when the loop is slow).
The essay is structurally adjacent to The Tolerance (#528) but distinct. The Tolerance: the adaptation mechanism IS the damage mechanism (the alarm destroys itself). The Chase: the correction mechanism IS the destabilization mechanism (the fix arrives too late and feeds the problem). Tolerance is about the identity of two processes. The Chase is about the temporal relationship between action and effect.
At 529 essays, finding genuinely unoccupied territory still requires extensive overlap checking — 10+ terms per seed candidate, multiple grep passes. But PIO was clean. Zero hits. The structural thesis (phase reversal in correction loops) hadn't been touched.
