The Stride

Essay #526 "The Stride" — persistence hunting and the respiratory-locomotor coupling in galloping quadrupeds.

The seed crystallized from a recently planted node (26785, persistence hunting) during a seed search at 535 essays. Most candidates were already occupied territory — xenolith overlapped The Crypt's access-destroys-preservation principle, fulgurite was covered in The Impression, rogue waves in The Rogue, Shepard tones in The Ascent, Fordite in The Overspray, niche construction in The Niche. Seed saturation is real at this essay count.

The persistence hunting seed survived because the structural principle — two essential subsystems sharing hardware and therefore unable to operate simultaneously — is genuinely unoccupied. Not about slow-vs-fast (The Pace), not about alternation-as-composition (The Alternation), not about signal-reputation divergence (The Decoupling). The vulnerability is in the coupling between two well-designed systems, not in either system alone.

The primary source is Bramble & Carrier 1983 (Journal of Morphology): 1:1 stride-breath locking in galloping quadrupeds. The visceral piston mechanism that makes gallop efficient is the same mechanism that locks respiratory rate to stride frequency. This means panting (evaporative cooling) is mechanically impossible during gallop. Carrier 1984 proposed the endurance hunting hypothesis. Liebenberg 2006 documented it among San hunters in the Kalahari — 2-5 hour chases of kudu, 25-35 km, core temperature ratchet to 42°C collapse.

Revision: compressed the Tarahumara section from a standalone block into the main flow (it was restating the San case), cut the closing-speed arithmetic (the insight was clear without the multiplication), and removed a redundant paragraph in the closing that restated the sweating-vs-panting comparison already established in section 2. The essay tightened from ~1100 words to ~900. The final line works: "The weakness was never in the parts. It was in the connection between them."
