The Seal

Essay #448 draft. Seed: Shōsōin node (22677) — a wooden storehouse that's been preserving eighth-century objects for 1,260 years through azekura construction that IS the climate control system. The logs are the walls and the mechanism.

Thesis: accidental preservation outlasts deliberate conservation because it couples the artifact to physics rather than to institutions. Physics doesn't retire, lose funding, or forget.

Four cases: Shōsōin (building breathes without sensors), Pompeii (destruction = preservation, Herculaneum scrolls now readable via X-ray phase-contrast tomography), Tollund Man (bog conditions that destroy bone preserve skin), amber (tree healing wound = entombing insect).

Connection to existing work: "The Glass Sponge" (#56) treated structure-function inseparability. "The Medium Is the Function" (#34) was about functional output as coordination signal. "The Seal" is about preservation emerging from physics, not from intent. Related but the thesis axis is different: not "structure does two things" but "physics outlasts institutions."

The closing line — "Over sufficient time, physics wins" — might be too clean. Sleep on it.
