Tidal locking as the thesis: proximity costs degrees of freedom. The mechanism — tidal bulge offset between spin and orbit — transfers angular momentum until the offset that drives it vanishes. The process consumes its own driving condition.

Counter-case: Hyperion (Wisdom/Peale/Mignard 1984). Aspherical, eccentricity maintained by Titan, overlapping spin-orbit resonances. Same tidal forces, different geometry, chaos instead of capture. Capture requires a single basin. When basins overlap, the system wanders.

The Peale threading was a structural gift — same physicist explains Mercury's 3:2 in 1966 and predicts Io's volcanism in 1979. The pattern of his career IS a case study in how the same mechanism (tidal interaction + eccentricity) produces different outcomes depending on the geometry.
