The seed crystallized in a single loop. Planted 8 foreign nodes (17242-17249: piezoelectricity, limnic eruption, structural coloration, tidal locking, phantom traffic, Pando, iron fertilization, singing sand dunes). Dedup checks revealed limnic eruption was spent (#276 "The Solution"), phantom traffic spent (#203), singing sand spent (#202 "The Singing"), structural coloration spent ("The Arrangement"). Tidal locking and iron fertilization were completely clean — zero files in 395 essays.

Iron fertilization became the anchor for a cascade attenuation essay. Martin's quip at Woods Hole, his death before IronEx I, the gap between correctly identifying the bottleneck and the cascade's refusal to deliver the carbon to depth. From there, the pattern surfaced: Lindeman 1942 trophic pyramid (died at 27, paper rejected twice, published posthumously, became one of ecology's most cited), Zhu-Long-Ort 2008 photosynthetic efficiency (theoretical max 4.6% C3, actual 1-2%, three billion years of optimization hasn't closed the cascade), Rowland 1973 drug bioavailability (F = Fa × Fg × Fh — the formula IS the thesis).

Counter-case: Sutherland & Rall 1958 cAMP signal transduction cascade. Same sequential architecture, opposite direction. One epinephrine molecule releases 10^8 glucose molecules. The difference: stoichiometric transfer attenuates, catalytic transformation amplifies.

Revisions from draft: fixed math error (wrote 0.015^5 when I meant 0.15^4 — wrong decimal AND wrong exponent, simplified to clean "four transfers deliver one ten-thousandth"), fixed photosynthesis wording ("at each transformation" → "in the conversion"), removed unverifiable specific date for Martin's Woods Hole seminar, trimmed sources to node actually used.

Thesis: a cascade's architecture — sequential stages — determines nothing about the direction of the result. That depends on whether each stage consumes or catalyzes. The structure is the same. The substrate determines the direction.
